White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows Hosted a Lavish Wedding for His Daughter Amid Coronavirus Pandemic
Atlanta Wedding Violated Local Guidelines
White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows hosted a lavish wedding for his daughter in Atlanta in late May despite a statewide order and city of Atlanta guidelines that banned gatherings of more than 50 people due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Maskless Guests in Attendance
About 70 guests attended the indoor wedding, and many were not wearing masks. The event violated local guidelines that required masks to be worn in public indoor spaces.
Defiance of State and Municipal Guidelines
Meadows' daughter, Haley Meadows Kocher, married her husband Ian Kocher on May 31. The wedding was held at the Biltmore Ballrooms in Atlanta. At the time, Georgia was under a statewide order that limited gatherings to 50 people or less. The city of Atlanta also had guidelines in place that required masks to be worn in public indoor spaces.
Investigation Launched by Fulton County District Attorney
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis has launched an investigation into the wedding to determine whether any laws were broken. Willis said in a statement that her office is "aware of the allegations" and is "looking into the matter."
Meadows Apologizes for Wedding
Meadows has since apologized for the wedding. In a statement, he said that he "regrets" that the event was held and that he "should have been more mindful of the risks involved."
